Le sud du Texas- Southern Texas

Nous avons passé du temps très agréable au Casa del Valle RV Resort à Alamo, au Texas. Ce camping nous proposait de nombreuses activités organisées: piscine, bain tourbions, terrains de jeu de pickle ball, jeu de shuffleboard, fer à cheval, salle de billard, salles de bricolage et de loisirs créatifs ... Nous avons participé à trois soupers et assisté à deux soirées de musique. Nous reviendrons probablement ici dans le futur. Pendant notre séjour, nous avons fait deux excursions. Nous avons conduit à South Padre Island. Nous nous sommes arrêtés au centre d'accueil, où nous avons pu voir de beaux châteaux de sable très détaillés et réalisés par des professionnels. Nous sommes ensuite allés visiter le South Padre Island Birding Nature Center. Un certain nombre d'oiseaux uniques ont migré dans la région. Nous avons pu conduire notre camion sur la plage du côté du golfe du Mexique. Un autre jour, nous avons visité deux World Birding Centers, situés dans le Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park et l'Estero Llano Grande State Park. À ces endroits, nous avons pu observer et photographier de nombreux oiseaux exotiques. Alors que nous étions dans la partie la plus au sud du Texas, nous avons parcouru de nombreux sentiers naturels dans les centres mondiaux d'observation des oiseaux et dans notre camping. We had a lovely time at the Casa del Valle RV Resort in Alamo, Texas. This resort had a lot of organized activities, a pool, a hot tub, pickle ball courts, shuffleboard, horseshoe, a billiard room, craft and hobby rooms... We participated in three dinners, and attended two evening jam sessions. We will probably come back here in the future. During our stay, we went on two-day trips. We drove to South Padre Island. There we stopped at the Visitors Center, where we could see lovely sand castles that were very detailed and done by professionals. We then went to visit the South Padre Island Birding Nature Center. There was a number of unique birds that migrate to the area. We were able to drive our truck on the beach on the Gulf of Mexico side of the island. On another day, we visited two World Birding Centers at Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park and Estero Llano Grande State Park.  At these locations, we were able to observe and photograph many exotic birds. While we were in this most southern part of Texas, we walked many nature trails in the World Birding Centers and in our RV resort. All the photos from the trip are here.

Nous avons passé une semaine au Lake Casa Blanca State Park, adjacent à la ville de Laredo, au Texas, ville frontalière du Mexique. Nous avons ensuite passé cinq jours à Falcon State Park, également le long de la rivière Rio Grande. Le Lake Casa Blanca SP est situé sur les rives du lac Casa Blanca, dans la ville de Laredo. C'est un très grand parc utilisé par la communauté locale avec de nombreux sentiers de randonnée. Notre camping adossé au lac avec une vue magnifique. Nous nous sommes fait de nouveaux amis et avons fait des feux de camp en soirée avec eux. La ville de Laredo est une grande ville frontalière très fréquentée avec le Mexique. Ce n'est pas une ville touristique. Lors de nos nombreuses promenades dans le parc, nous avons eu l’occasion de voir des cerfs de Virginie, des pécaris ( javelinas) et un géocoucou (un roadrunner) très rapide (pas de photo). Lors de notre voyage dans la région, nous sommes passés par les villes d’Oilton, Hebbronville, Randao, Escubas et à Zapata. À Zapata, nous avons mangé dans un parc du comté en mangeant des tacos d'un vendeur de tacos local. Nous nous sommes également arrêtés à San Jose de los Carralitos Ranch, un site historique. Falcon SP est situé sur le réservoir international Falcon, sur la rivière Rio Grande. C'est un petit parc avec de petits sites de camping. Pendant notre séjour, nous avons parcouru les nombreux sentiers de randonnée et avons eu la chance de voir un grand nombre de pécaris traverser la route. Lors d'une excursion d'une journée, nous sommes passés par les villes de Roma, Sabinelo (un petit village pauvre sur le Rio Grande) et Rio Grande City. Rio Grande City est une ville frontalière située le long du fleuve Rio Grande. Il fait partie des "routes de la rivière", un corridor patrimonial riche en héritages naturels et culturels. Nous avons découvert cette ville à bord du trolley Bessie III qui empruntait de petites rues tracées il y a plus d'un siècle. Nous nous sommes arrêtés pour admirer la Grotte de Lourdes dédiée en 1928, une réplique du sanctuaire de Lourdes, en France. Nous avons passé deux semaines au calme dans ces parcs d’État, où nous avons rencontré de nouveaux amis et profité de la vue et de la nature de la région. We spent a week in Lake Casa Blanca State Park adjacent to the city of Laredo, Texas, a border city to Mexico. We then spent five days in Falcon SP, also along the Rio Grande River. Lake Casa Blanca SP is located on the shore of Lake Casa Blanca, in the city of Laredo. It is a very big park used by the local community with many walking trails. Our campsite was backing on the lake with a beautiful view. We made new friends and had campfires at night with them. The city of Laredo is a big old busy border town with Mexico. This is not a tourist town. On our many walks in the park, we had the opportunity to see white-tail deer, javelinas and a road runner that was very fast (no pictures). On our road trip in the area, we passed by the towns of Oilton, Hebbronville, Randao, Escubas and in Zapata. In Zapata, we had lunch in a county park eating tacos from a local taco vendor. We also stopped in San Jose de los Carralitos Ranch, a historical site. Falcon SP is located on the International Falcon Reservoir, on the Rio Grande River. This is a small park with small camping sites. During our stay, we walked the many walking trails and was lucky to see a large number of javelinas crossing the road. On a day trip, we passed by the town of Roma, Sabinelo (a small poor village on the Rio Grande River) and Rio Grande City. Rio Grande City is a border city that lies along the Rio Grande River. It is part of "roads of the river" a heritage corridor rich in natural and cultural legacies. We discovered this city aboard the Bessie III trolley travelling down small streets laid out over a century ago. We stopped to admire the Grotto of Lourdes dedicated in 1928, a replica of the shrine in Lourdes, France. We had a quiet two weeks in these state parks, meeting new friends and enjoying the views and nature in the area. We were also able to photograph the Super Blood Wolf Moon, the night of January 21st. Nous avons quitté Big Bend National Park et avons passé une semaine au Seminole Canyon State Park. Nous avons parcouru de nombreux sentiers pédestres, visité le musée du Judge Roy Bean et fait un tour dans les environs pour visiter de petites villes locales. Seminole Canyon State Park est un magnifique parc pittoresque situé près de la rivière Rio Grande. Chaque jour, nous empruntions différents sentiers dans le parc. L'un d'entre eux était au bord du canyon (une heure et demie) et un autre dans le canyon guidé par un gardien du parc (une heure et demie). Les anciens habitants de Seminole Canyon ont laissé leur marque de plusieurs manières, notamment par le biais de peintures rupestres appelées pictogrammes. Le parc contient certains des exemples les plus remarquables non seulement au Texas, mais dans le monde entier. Les pictogrammes ont 4000 ans. Nous avons également parcouru le sentier du Rio Grande (3 heures) qui nous a amenés à l'intersection de la rivière Rio Grande et du canyon Seminole. À Langtry, au Texas, nous avons visité le musée du Judge Roy Bean. Le juge Roy Bean était la "Loi à l'ouest des Pecos". Juge de paix le plus coloré de l'ouest, il a dirigé la dernière frontière de l'Amérique au cours des dernières décennies du 19e siècle. Il a statué avec sa propre justice et a apposé sa marque indélébile sur les terres escarpées du Texas, à l'ouest de la rivière Pecos. Le barrage Amistad (qui signifie "amitié" en espagnol) a été construit de 1963 à 1968 pour lutter contre les inondations, conserver l'eau, l'énergie hydroélectrique et les loisirs. Nous avons passé une très belle semaine au Seminole Canyon State Park et le recommandons vivement à tout le monde d'y visiter. Il nous donne également une connexion Internet illimitée au téléphone et une capacité de 15 Go lors de son utilisation hot spot avec nos autres appareils, comme notre iPad et notre ordinateur portable. We left Big Bend N.P. to spend a week in Seminole Canyon State Park. Here we walked many trails, visited the Judge Roy Bean Museum, and took a ride in the area to visit local small  towns. Seminole Canyon SP is a beautiful scenic park located near the Rio Grande River. Every day, we took different trails in the park. One of them was on the edge of the canyon (1.5 hr), and another one in the canyon guided by a park ranger (1.5 hr). The past inhabitants of Seminole Canyon left their mark in several ways, most notably through rock paintings called pictographs. The park contains some of the most outstanding examples not only in Texas, but in the world. The pictographs are 4000 years old. We also walked the Rio Grande trail (3 hr) that took us to the intersection of the Rio Grande River and the Seminole Canyon. In Langtry, TX, we visited the Judge Roy Bean Museum. Judge Roy Bean was the "Law west of the Pecos". The West's most colourful justice of the peace, he ruled America's last frontier in the last decades of the 19th century. He ruled with his own brand of justice and set his indelible stamp on the rugged Texas lands west of the Pecos River. On our day trip around the area, we visited the many small towns: Comstock, Del Rio, Bracketville and Eagle Pass. We had lunch in a public park with a pond and many ducks, geese and egrets. During our trip, we also visited the Amistad Reservoir area. Amistad (meaning "friendship" in Spanish) Dam was built from 1963-1968 for flood control, water conservation, hydroelectric power, and recreation. We had a really lovely week in Seminole Canyon SP, and would highly recommend it to everyone. We will now answer some of the questions sent to us by a few of our blog subscribers. What tools would you recommend a RVer bring? This is a list of the tools we carry: · Spare fan belt · ODBII · a good set of screw drivers · metric and imperial wrench · socket set · electrical tester · axe · good tire pressure gauge What do you do for phone and internet services in the US? There are a number of phone companies in the US. We have done TracFone in the pass and now we use the Metro by T-Mobile. Metro by T-Mobile give us a smart phone with unlimited calls to Canada, the US and Mexico. It also gives us unlimited internet on the phone and 15 gig when using it has a hot spot with our other devices like our I-pad and laptop. All that for $71 us per month. What do you do to prepare your trip, reservation or not? We do some research on Google, we get books from CAA (AAA), we get the tourism guides in the mail months before and at the visitor centre once we get there and also talk to other RVers and ask what they did in the area that we are going to. We update the GPS with the new maps, get an oil change, we check and fill all fluids, we check the battery, we get new wiper blades, check tire pressure and also check breaks by removing the 4 wheel. De l'Arizona au Texas ~ From Arizona to Texas

En route pour le Texas, nous nous sommes arrêtés au Carefree Village Resort pour passer quelques jours avec nos amis, Gerald et Lise. Nous avons également visité le Chiricahua Desert Museum, le parc d'état de Davis Mountain, le parc national de Big Bend, le parc d'état de Big Bend Ranch et de petites villes à proximité. Pendant que nous étions au Carefree Village Resort, nous avons eu l’occasion de jouer au bowling, au mini-putt, au jeu de shuffleboard, de nager dans la piscine et de profiter du spa. Nous avons passé deux soirées cinéma avec des amis, dans un cinéma privé de 9 places. Au Chiricahua Desert Museum, nous avons pu voir dans leur enclos de verre des serpents et des tortues locaux. Dehors, nous avons traversé un jardin de cactus, où nous avons été surpris de voir de la neige sur eux. Au parc d'état de Davis Mountain, nous nous sommes réveillés avec trois cerfs-mulets se nourrissant à côté de notre VR. Nous sommes aussi montés dans la montagne pour profiter de la vue magnifique. Le parc national Big Bend a été fermé en raison de la fermeture du gouvernement. Nous avions vérifié le site quelques jours avant notre arrivée, les terrains de camping étaient ouverts, mais les services des visiteurs ne seraient pas disponibles. À notre grande surprise, tous les terrains de camping étaient fermés alors que nous avions une réservation pour une semaine. Nous avons trouvé un terrain de camping local ouvert à Stillwell RV, près de l'entrée du parc. Nous avons parcouru le parc et apprécié le paysage, parcouru les sentiers et trouvé un certain nombre de personnes en train de se détendre dans les sources chaudes. Au cours d'une longue journée, nous avons traversé le Big Bend NP pour nous rendre à Big Bend Ranch SP. Ce parc n’est qu’un parc d’utilisation de jour où nous pourrions conduire le long du fleuve Rio Grande qui sépare le Mexique et les États-Unis. Nous nous sommes arrêtés en chemin pour profiter des vues spectaculaires. La route n'était pas pour les faibles de cœur ou les véhicules récréatifs. Nous avons visité la ville de Terlingua, où il y avait une préparation au chili, et sommes passées par d’autres petites villes telles que Study Butte, Lajitas, Redford, Presidio, Shafter, Marfa, Alpine et Marathon. On our way to Texas, we stopped at the Carefree Village Resort to spend a few days with our friends, Gerald and Lise. We also visited the Chiricahua Desert Museum , Davis Mountain State Park, Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park and small towns nearby. While we were at the Carefree Village Resort, we had the opportunity to play 10 pin bowling, mini-putt, shuffleboard, and swim in the pool and enjoy the hot tub. We had two movie nights with friends, in a 9-seat private cinema. At the Chiricahua Desert Museum, we were able to see in their glass enclosure, some of the local snakes and turtles. Outside we walked by a cactus garden, where we were surprised to see snow on them. At the Davis Mountain State Park, we awoke with three mule deer feeding beside our RV. We also went up the mountain to enjoy the beautiful views. Big Bend National Park was closed because of the government shutdown. We had verified the website a few days before arriving, the campgrounds were open but visitor services would be available. To our surprise, all campgrounds were closed even though we had a reservation for a week. We found a local campground open at Stillwell RV, near the entrance to the park. We drove through the park, and enjoyed the scenery, walked the trails, and found a number of people relaxing in the hot springs. On a long day trip, we drove through Big Bend NP, to get to Big Bend Ranch SP. This park is only a day-use park where we could drive along the shore of the Rio Grande River that separates Mexico and the US. We stopped along the way to enjoy the spectacular views. The road was not for the faint of heart or RVs. We visited the town of Terlingua, where there was a chili cook-off, and passed by other small towns such as Study Butte, Lajitas, Redford, Presidio, Shafter, Marfa, Alpine and Marathon. We really enjoyed our stay at the resort and the Big Bend area. This is only the beginning of our two-month stay in Texas. All the photos from the trip are here.

Décembre à Yuma AZ ~ December in Yuma AZ

De retour de notre court séjour à Los Angeles, nous avons eu l’occasion de nous détendre avec des amis dans la région de Yuma, AZ. Nous avons assisté à un défilé de lumières, assisté à une pièce de théâtre de la Nativité, marché dans un quartier de maisons décorées, fait un tour dans les petits chemins avoisinants et fêté Noël avec des amis. La saison de Noël dans la région de Yuma est très spéciale pour nous. Nous avons trouvé des activités pour égayer cette période de l'année. Avec des amis, nous nous sommes assis le long de la rue Main de Yuma pour regarder un défilé de lumières pendant plus d’une heure. Avant le défilé, nous avons mangé au restaurant Lutes Casino. Nous avons également assisté à un concert de jazz de chansons de Noël en plein air. Deux de nos activités de Noël préférées dans la région sont d'assister à la pièce de théâtre d'une crèche vivante à l'église Champion, avec des animaux vivants et de belles chansons. Nous nous sommes assis en plein air sur des balles de foin. C'était magique. Notre deuxième activité consiste à marcher dans un quartier magnifique, où toutes les maisons sont décorées avec des lumières de toutes les couleurs. Cela faisait briller la rue. Ronald et Réjean B. ont emprunté des routes secondaires et ont trouvé deux anciennes mines, la mine American Girl et Old Tumco, Gold Rock Ranch ainsi que de nombreux autres secteurs pour faire du boondocking. Un autre jour, Ronald et Gerald D. firent une promenade en jeep dans les dunes à proximité et restèrent coincés pendant un moment. La semaine suivante, Ronald est allé avec Réjean P. dans les mêmes dunes et a eu l’occasion de conduire le VTT et a effrayé Réjean P.. Quelques jours plus tard, Ronald et Gerald se sont rendus à Glamis, en Californie, où les dunes sont beaucoup plus grandes et sont connues comme la capitale mondiale des jouets de sable. Ils ont vu de très gros VTT coûteux de 500 à 600 chevaux. Le jour de Noël, nous avons participé à l’organisation d’un dîner avec plus de 25 de nos amis du désert. Tout le monde a apporté son plat de spécialité. La nourriture était incroyable et comme d'habitude nous avions des restants. Pendant les journées, nous nous sommes réunis pour discuter, jouer à des jeux, résoudre des casse-têtes et nous nous sommes entraidés pour régler divers problèmes. En soirée, nous nous sommes assis autour d'un feu de camp en utilisant des palettes de bois que Ronald avait trouvées derrière Lowe's, Home Depot, Wal-Mart et autres. After coming back from our short trip to Los Angeles, we had the opportunity to relax with friends in the Yuma, AZ area.  We also attended a parade of lights, saw a live Nativity play, walked in the neighbourhood of decorated houses, took a ride in the back country and celebrated Christmas with friends. Christmas season in the Yuma area is very special to us. We found activities to brighten this time of year. With friends, we sat along the Main Street of Yuma to watch a parade of lights for over one hour.  Before the parade, we had a tasty lunch at the Lutes Casino Restaurant. We also attended an outdoor jazz concert of Christmas songs. Two of our favourite Christmas activities to do in the area is to attend the Jesus is Born live Nativity play at the Champion Church, with live animals and beautiful songs. The seating area is outdoor on bales of hay. It's magical. Our second activity is to walk into a gorgeous neighbourhood, where all the houses are lite and decorated. It makes the street glow. Ronald and Rejean B. went on back roads and found two old mines, The American Girl Mine and the Old Tumco mine, Gold Rock Ranch and also many, many boondocking areas. On another day, Ronald and Gerald D. went on a jeep ride in the nearby sand dunes and got stuck for a little while. The next week, Ronald went with Rejean P. in the same dunes and had the opportunity to drive the ATV and scared Rejean P. A few days later, Ronald and Gerald went to Glamis, CA where the dunes are much bigger and is known as the sand toy capital of the world. They saw very large expensive ATVs with 500-600 HP. On Christmas Day, we participated in organizing a potluck lunch with over 25 of our desert friends. Everybody brought their specialty dish. The food was amazing and as usual we had leftovers. During the day, we gathered together to chat, play games, work on puzzles, and helped each other fix a variety of things. At night, we sat around a camp fire using palettes for firewood that Ronald found behind Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart and others. All the photos from the trip are here.

Une visite à Los Angeles ~ A visit to Los Angeles

Nous avons laissé notre roulotte dans le BLM à Pilot Knob, près de Yuma AZ, avec nos amis Jules, Colette, Réjean et Jacqueline, pour passer quelques jours avec notre fils Eric et sa fiancée Chloé, à Los Angeles. En chemin, nous sommes passés par Palm Spring, où nous pouvions voir des milliers d’éoliennes de chaque côté de la route. C'était très impressionnant. Pendant notre séjour à Los Angeles, nous avons visité le célèbre Pink's Hot Dog, le Black Rabbit Rose Theatre, le boulevard Hollywood, le Magic Castle, le spectacle Don't Tell Comedy, Venice Beach et le studio CBS pour The Price is Right. Pink's Hot Dog est un petit restaurant de grande renommée de hot dogs qui est dans le secteur de Fairfax à Los Angeles. Les murs étaient couverts d’images d’acteurs célèbres qui s’étaient arrêtés ici pour manger. Vous pouvez manger un hot-dog avec n'importe quels garnitures et condiments que vous pouvez imaginer. Nous avons ensuite marché sur le boulevard Hollywood et assisté à un spectacle de magie au Black Rabbit Rose Theatre. Le lendemain, nous avons eu droit à une visite et à des spectacles de magie au Magic Castle à Hollywood. C'est un club privé dont Eric est un membre étudiant. Les spectacles étaient impressionnants avec des magiciens très très talentueux. Le bâtiment était majestueux et bien décoré. Après le souper, nous avons assisté à un spectacle de «Don't Tell Comedy» avec 8 humoristes qui nous ont fait rire toute la soirée. Nous avons passé un après-midi à marcher sur le grand quai, la plage et les rues voisines de Venice Beach. Nous avons également parcouru les canaux de Venice, où seuls les petits bateaux, les canoës et les pédalos sont autorisés. Toutes les arrière-cours des maisons face aux canaux étaient bien entretenues et décorées. Nous avons passé une longue et amusante journée aux studios de CBS pour l'enregistrement de "The Price is Right". Après avoir passé la sécurité, nous avons attendu longtemps avant d'être interrogés pour être dignes d'être sélectionnés comme candidats. Vous verrez le 5 février 2019, si nous avons été sélectionnés ou NON. Pendant que nous étions à LA, nous avons loué de petits scooters électriques. Ces scooters sont loués à la minute et vous permettent de circuler sur les pistes cyclables ou sur les rues. C'est un moyen abordable de voyager dans la ville au coût de 1 $ pour débuter, puis de 15 ¢ par minute. Dans les rues du quartier de Venice Beach, nous avons vu un certain nombre de VR garé dans les rues sans frais. Certains étaient en meilleure condition que d'autres. Sur le chemin du retour, nous avons emprunté la route 1, le long de la côte du Pacifique en passant par Long Beach, Seal Beach, Sunset Beach (où nous nous sommes arrêtés sur la plage pour le lunch), Huntington Beach, Newport Beach et Laguna Beach. Nous nous sommes également arrêtés pour prendre des photos en cours de route. Nous ne pouvions pas nous empêcher de nous arrêter à l'un de nos endroits préférés, La Jolla Cove. Ici, nous pouvions voir un grand nombre de phoques et d'otaries (lions, loups et ours de mer) se reposer sur la plage et sur les rochers. Certaines femelles nourrissaient ses petits. We left our trailer in the Pilot Knob BLM, near Yuma AZ, with our friends Jules, Colette, Réjean and Jacqueline, to spend a few days with our son Eric and his fiancé Chloé, in Los Angeles. On our way, we passed by Palm Spring, where we could see thousands of wind turbines on each side of the road. It was very impressive. While we were in Los Angeles, we got to visit the famous Pink's Hot Dog stand, the Black Rabbit Rose Theatre, Hollywood Boulevard, the Magic Castle, Don't Tell Comedy, Venice Beach and the CBS studio for the Price is Right. Pink's Hot Dog is an iconic hot dog stand that is a landmark restaurant in the Fairfax District in LA. The walls were covered with pictures of famous actors that had stopped here to eat. You can eat a hot dog with any topping that you can imagine. We then walked on Hollywood Blvd, and attended a magic show at the Black Rabbit Rose Theatre. The next day, we were treated to a visit and magic shows at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. This is a private club where Eric is a student member. The shows were up close magic with magicians that were very very good. The building was impressive and well decorated. After dinner, we attended the "Don't Tell Comedy" stand-up show with 8 comedians that made us laugh all night. We spent an afternoon, walking on the pier, the beach and the nearby streets of Venice Beach. We also walked the Venice canals, where only small boats, canoes and paddleboats are permitted. All the house's backyards facing the canals were well maintained and decorated. We had a fun and long day at the CBS Studios for the taping of "The Price is Right". After going through security, we waited in line a long time before being interviewed to be worthy to be selected as a contestant. You will see on February 5th 2019, if we were selected or NOT. While we were in LA, we rented small electric scooters. These scooters are rented by the minute, and allows you to travel on the bike paths or streets. It is an affordable way to travel in the city at a cost of $1 to start and then 15 ¢  per minute. On the streets of the Venice Beach neighbourhood, we saw a number of RV's that were parked on the streets at no cost. Some were in better shape than others. On our way back, we travelled on route 1 along the Pacific Coast passing by Long Beach, Seal Beach, Sunset Beach (we ate lunch on the beach), Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. We also stopped to take pictures along the way. We couldn't resist stopping at one of our favourite locations, La Jolla Cove. Here we could see a large number of seals and sea lions resting on the beach and the rocks. Some of the females were feeding their young. We had a lovely vacation.
