Nous avons quitté l'île de Galveston en traversier pour rejoindre la péninsule de Bolivar. Alors que nous étions sur le traversier, nous avons vu de nombreux cargos, un navire de croisière, une épave de navire, d'autres traversiers et également Seawolf Park. À Port Bolivar, de nombreuses maisons, une école et une église ont été construites sur pilotis afin d'éviter les inondations en cas d'ouragan ou de tsunami. Nous avons passé une semaine avec nos amis Sylvie et Sylvain au Sea Rim State Park (2*). Ce parc est situé sur la côte du golfe du Mexique, près de la ville de Port Arthur. Port Arthur est un port avec de nombreuses raffineries de pétrole. Nous avons dû traverser une raffinerie de pétrole pour nous rendre au State Park. Pendant notre séjour, nous avons visité Port Arthur, où nous avons vu le sanctuaire de Notre-Dame de Guadalupe avec une statue de bronze de 17 pieds. Nous avons également pu voir beaucoup de belles maisons et un certain nombre de maisons négligées. Nous sommes également allés à la ville de Nederland Texas (pas Netherland TX). Cette communauté a été établie par des immigrants de la Hollande en 1898. Les citoyens de la ville ont érigé la réplique exacte d'un moulin à vent hollandais. Nous avons ensuite visité le moulin à vent qui est maintenant un centre de visiteurs et un musée. Nous avons aussi visité "La Maison Acadienne", qui représente les nombreux Français venus du sud de la Louisiane pour s’installer à Nederland. Nous nous sommes arrêtés pour dîner dans un charmant parc avec beaucoup de canards qui voulaient notre nourriture. Alors que nous étions dans le State Park, nous avons profité de nombreuses promenades sur la plage à marées hautes et basses. Nous avons également aimé passer du temps avec nos amis à jouer à des jeux intérieurs et extérieurs, à dîner ensemble tous les soirs et à nous asseoir autour de quelques feux de camp. En raison du brouillard, du temps nuageux et des moustiques, nous n’avons pas pleinement profité de la région. Toutes les photos du voyage sont ici.

We left Galveston Island by ferry to cross to the Bolivar Peninsula. While we were on the ferry, we saw many cargo ships, a cruise ship, a ship wreck, other ferries and Seawolf Park.  In Port Bolivar, there were many houses, a school and  church that were built on stilts, to prevent flooding in case of hurricanes or tsunamis. We spent a week with our friends Sylvie and Sylvain at Sea Rim State Park (2*). It is located on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, near the city of Port Arthur. Port Arthur is a port with many oil refineries. We had to drive through one to get to the State Park. During our stay, we visited Port Arthur, where we saw the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe with a 17-foot bronze statue. We were also able to see many big houses and a number of neglected ones. We also went to the town  of Nederland, Texas (not Netherland TX). This community was settled by immigrants from Holland, in 1898. Citizens of the city erected an exact replica of a Dutch windmill. We then visited the windmill that is now a visitors' centre and museum. We also visited "La Maison Acadienne" which represents the many French people that came from South Louisiana to make their home in Nederland. We stopped to have lunch in a lovely park with a lot of ducks wanting our food. While we were in the state park, we enjoyed many walks on the beach at high and low tide. We also enjoyed spending time playing indoor and outdoor games, dining together every night and sitting around  a few campfires, with our friends. Because of the fog, cloudy weather and mosquitoes, we did not fully enjoy the area. All the photos from the trip are here.

Galveston Texas

Galveston Texas est une belle ville portuaire sur la côte du golfe du Mexique. Nous avons passé une belle semaine au Galveston Island State Park près de la plage, à quelques centaines de pieds de notre camping. Nous pouvions entendre les vagues et le vent 24h sur 24h. Le jour, le temps était généralement nuageux et frais la nuit. Nous avons vu un certain nombre de navires de marchandise et un bateau de croisière dans la zone portuaire. Nous avons visité les deux quartiers historiques: le centre-ville et le résidentiel. Le centre-ville historique a été bien préservé. Nous nous sommes promenés en ville et avons pris un tour de tramway pour 1 $ / personne. Le quartier résidentiel historique avait de belles maisons restaurées, certaines étaient même décorées pour Mardi Gras. Nous avons également pu voir sur certaines des maisons le niveau de l'eau lors de l'ouragan Ike de 2008. Nous avons fait une excursion d'une journée à Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. Ici, nous avons fait un tour en auto dans le refuge et nous avons pu voir des oiseaux et un alligator. Les moustiques étaient très heureux de nous voir. Au cours de la semaine, nous avons longé cette belle plage avec nos amis et avons visité le Seawall. Dimanche, nous avons assisté à la messe à l'église Sacred Heart. C'est une belle et grande église blanche avec de nombreux vitraux qui a été construite au début des années 1900. Nous avons célébré ensemble la Saint-Valentin au restaurant Fishermen's Wharf, situé dans la zone portuaire de la ville. Toutes les photos du voyage sont ici.

Galveston Texas, is a beautiful port city on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico. We had a lovely week in Galveston Island State Park near the beach located a few hundred feet from our campsite. We could hear the waves and the wind, 24 hours a day. The weather was mostly cloudy during the day and cool at night. We saw a number of cargo ships and a cruise ship in the harbour area. We visited both historical districts: downtown and the residential. The historic downtown was well preserved. We walked downtown and took a trolley tour for $1/person. The historic residential district had beautiful restored houses, some were even decorated for Mardi Gras. We were also able to see on some of the houses, the level of the water during the 2008 Hurricane Ike. We did a day trip to Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. Here we did an auto tour in the refuge and we were able to see some birds and an alligator. The mosquitoes were very happy to see us. During the week, we walked along this lovely beach with our friends, and visited the Seawall. On Sunday, we attended mass at the Sacred Heart Church. It is a beautiful and big white church with many stain glass windows that was built in the early 1900s. We celebrated Valentine's Day together at the Fishermen's Wharf restaurant located in the port area of town. All the photos from the trip are here.

San Antonio Texas

Nous sommes arrivés à Braunig Lake RV Resort, à Elmendorf au Texas, dans la banlieue de San Antonio. Un camping magnifique et paisible avec une piscine et un bain chaud, mais sans autres activités. Nous avons été rejoints pendant quelques jours par notre fils Eric et sa fiancée Chloé. Ils sont sur leur chemin de retour de LA. Ensemble, nous avons visité le centre-ville de San Antonio. Nous avons marché le long du célèbre River Walk et avons profité d'une promenade en bateau guidée sur la rivière San Antonio. Nous avons visité la mission de l'Alamo, site de la bataille de l'Alamo de 1836. Nous avons ensuite marché dans le centre-ville et nous sommes arrêtés pour voir le Buckhorn Saloon. Le Saloon a été créé en 1881, c'est là que Teddy Roosevelt a recruté les Rough Riders et que Pancho Villa aurait planifié la révolution mexicaine. Les murs sont couverts de trophées d'animaux. Nous avons eu deux soupés ensemble, l'un le long du River Walk et l'autre au barbecue Texas Pride. Ce restaurant est une ancienne station d’essence reconvertie et unique en son genre et sert une poitrine de bœuf typique du Texas (brisket), un dessert aux pêches (peach cobbler), le tout dans une atmosphère du Texas. Nous avons également assisté à un spectacle son et lumière projeté sur la cathédrale de San Fernando. Le lendemain du départ de nos invités, nous avons fait une randonnée d'une journée dans la région de New Braunfels, TX. New Braunfels a été fondée en 1845 par des colons allemands. Ils ont un beau centre-ville avec des bâtiments historiques. Nous nous sommes arrêtés et avons mangé à la boulangerie Naegelin, fondée en 1868, la plus ancienne des boulangeries au Texas. Nous avons poursuivi notre route le long de la rivière Guadalupe, où, par temps chaud, les gens pourraient pratiquer diverses activités nautiques telles que la descente de la rivière en tube, le kayak, le camping et s'amuser sur les patios pour fêter. Après avoir visité la mission Alamo, nous avons également visité les quatre autres missions de la région: Mission Espada, Mission San Juan, Mission Concepción et Mission San José. Ces missions ont été établies par des missionnaires Franciscains au début du 18e siècle. Le gouvernement espagnol envoya des missionnaires afin de convertir les populations indigènes au Catholicisme, tout en les formant à devenir de productifs citoyens espagnols. Nous avons assisté à la messe, en anglais, à la mission San José, qui ne comptait que des places debout. La chorale et les musiciens étaient Mariachis avec des guitares, des trompettes et une harpiste. Après la messe, le prêtre a invité tous les participants qui célébraient des anniversaires et une fête à se rassembler devant l'église. Comme c'était la fête de Danielle ce jour-là, elle a été sérénadée par les mariachis. En parcourant San Antonio et les grandes villes du Texas, nous avons constaté qu’elles n’avaient pas peur de construire de beaux et impressionnants ponts. Nous avons apprécié notre séjour dans la région de San Antonio. Nous avons eu un mélange de températures chaudes et des journées malheureusement très fraîches (presque gelées la nuit). We arrived at Braunig Lake RV Resort, in Elmendorf TX, a suburb of San Antonio. A beautiful and peaceful campground with a pool and hot tub, but with no other activities. We were joined for a few days by our son Eric and his fiancé Chloé. They were on their way back home from LA. Together, we visited downtown San Antonio. We walked along the famous River Walk and enjoyed a guided boat ride on the San Antonio River. We visited the Alamo Mission, the site of the battle of the Alamo of 1836. We then walked downtown and stopped to see the Buckhorn Saloon. The Saloon was established in 1881, it is where Teddy Roosevelt recruited Rough Riders and where Pancho Villa is rumoured to have planned the Mexican Revolution. The walls are covered  with trophy animals. We enjoyed two dinners together, one along the River Walk and the other at the Texas Pride BBQ. This restaurant is a converted old gas station that is a one of a kind, and serves typical Texas brisket, award-winning peach cobbler all with a Texas atmosphere. We also attended a sound and light show projected on San Fernando Cathedral. The day after our guests left, we took a day trip to the New Braunfels area. New Braunfels was founded in 1845 by German settlers. They have a beautiful downtown with historic buildings. We stopped and ate at Naegelin' Bakery founded in 1868, the oldest continuously operating bakery in Texas. We continued our drive along the Guadalupe River, where in warmer weather, people could do a variety of water activities such as tubing down the river, kayaking, camping and having fun on party decks. After visiting the Alamo Mission, we also visited the other four missions in the area: Mission Espada, Mission San Juan, Mission Concepción and Mission San José. These missions were established by Franciscan missionaries in the early 18th century. The Spanish government sent missionaries to convert native populations to Catholicism, while training them to become productive Spanish citizens. We attended mass, in English, in Mission San José, which was standing room only. The choir and musicians were Mariachi with guitars, trumpets and a harp player. After the mass, the priest invited all the attendees that were celebrating anniversaries and birthdays to gather in the front of the church. Since it was Danielle's birthday that day, she was serenaded by the mariachis. As we travelled through San Antonio and Texas's big cities, we noticed that they are not afraid to build beautiful and impressive bridges. We enjoyed our stay in the San Antonio area. Nous avons passé une semaine au Lake Corpus Christi State Park, où nous avons rencontré Sylvie et Sylvain. Nous les avions déjà rencontrés en Floride en 2016. Ce parc est situé au nord-ouest de la ville de Corpus Christi. Le lac est un réservoir qui est administré et exploité par la ville de Corpus Christi à des fins d’approvisionnement en eau et de loisirs. Le barrage de Fruta a été achevé en 1929 et reconstruit en 1934 et 1958. Pendant notre séjour, nous avons visité Padre Island  National Seashore, le Mustang Island State Park, l'Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, le Goose Island State Park et le King Ranch. Avec nos amis, nous avons pris une journée de route pour Padre Island  National Seashore et Mustang Island SP. Là nous avons conduit sur la plage, où nous avons vu des gens camper avec leur RV. Un autre jour, nous avons conduit à Kingsville, TX. pour visiter King Ranch. King Ranch s'étend sur 825 000 acres, soit aussi grand que l'État de Rhode Island. Nous avons fait un tour en autobus sur une partie de la terre, où nous avons vu des races de bétail du Texas Longhorn, Santa Gertrudis et Santa Cruz. Il y avait aussi des chevaux de race "Quarter Horse", des champs de coton et de nombreux puits de pétrole sur la propriété. La société de camions Ford a  consacré un modèle à King Ranch, qui est leur modèle le plus luxueux. Nous avons également visité l'Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, où nous avons vu à distance un certain nombre d'oiseaux migrateurs, d'alligators et de la grue blanche en voie de disparition. Sur le chemin du retour, nous avons suivi le golfe du Mexique jusqu'à la ville de Rockport et nous nous sommes arrêtés à Goose Island SP pour une brève visite. Pendant notre séjour, nous avons fait quelques feux de camp avec nos amis, nous nous sommes promenés dans le parc, avons vu de nombreux cerfs et réalisé que le camping hivernal au Texas était comme un camping d'automne à la maison. We spent a week at Lake Corpus Christi State Park, where we met Sylvie and Sylvain. We had previously met them in Florida in 2016. This State Park is located northwest of the city of Corpus Christi. The lake is a reservoir that is owned and operated by the city for municipal water supply and recreational purposes. The Fruta Dam was originally completed in 1929 and rebuilt in 1934 and 1958. While we were here, we visited Padre Island National Seashore, Mustang Island State Park, Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, Goose Island State Park and King Ranch. With our friends, we took a day's drive to Padre Island  National Seashore and Mustang Island SP. There we drove on the beach, where we saw people camping with their RV. On another day, we drove to Kingsville, TX. to visit King Ranch. King Ranch is 825,000 acres, that is more land than the state of Rhode Island. We did a bus tour on part of the land, where we saw some Texas Longhorns, Santa Gertrudis and Santa Cruz breeds of cattle. They also had Quarter horses, cotton fields and many oil wells on the property. The Ford truck company dedicated a model to King Ranch, which is their most luxurious model. We also visited the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, where we saw a number migratory birds, alligators and the endangered Whooping Crane at a distance. On our way back, we followed the Gulf of Mexico till the city of Rockport, and stopped in Goose Island SP for a short visit. During our stay, we had a few campfires with our friends, walked in the park, saw many deer and realized that Texas winter camping is like fall camping at home.
