Décembre à Yuma AZ ~ December in Yuma AZ

De retour de notre court séjour à Los Angeles, nous avons eu l’occasion de nous détendre avec des amis dans la région de Yuma, AZ. Nous avons assisté à un défilé de lumières, assisté à une pièce de théâtre de la Nativité, marché dans un quartier de maisons décorées, fait un tour dans les petits chemins avoisinants et fêté Noël avec des amis. La saison de Noël dans la région de Yuma est très spéciale pour nous. Nous avons trouvé des activités pour égayer cette période de l'année. Avec des amis, nous nous sommes assis le long de la rue Main de Yuma pour regarder un défilé de lumières pendant plus d’une heure. Avant le défilé, nous avons mangé au restaurant Lutes Casino. Nous avons également assisté à un concert de jazz de chansons de Noël en plein air. Deux de nos activités de Noël préférées dans la région sont d'assister à la pièce de théâtre d'une crèche vivante à l'église Champion, avec des animaux vivants et de belles chansons. Nous nous sommes assis en plein air sur des balles de foin. C'était magique. Notre deuxième activité consiste à marcher dans un quartier magnifique, où toutes les maisons sont décorées avec des lumières de toutes les couleurs. Cela faisait briller la rue. Ronald et Réjean B. ont emprunté des routes secondaires et ont trouvé deux anciennes mines, la mine American Girl et Old Tumco, Gold Rock Ranch ainsi que de nombreux autres secteurs pour faire du boondocking. Un autre jour, Ronald et Gerald D. firent une promenade en jeep dans les dunes à proximité et restèrent coincés pendant un moment. La semaine suivante, Ronald est allé avec Réjean P. dans les mêmes dunes et a eu l’occasion de conduire le VTT et a effrayé Réjean P.. Quelques jours plus tard, Ronald et Gerald se sont rendus à Glamis, en Californie, où les dunes sont beaucoup plus grandes et sont connues comme la capitale mondiale des jouets de sable. Ils ont vu de très gros VTT coûteux de 500 à 600 chevaux. Le jour de Noël, nous avons participé à l’organisation d’un dîner avec plus de 25 de nos amis du désert. Tout le monde a apporté son plat de spécialité. La nourriture était incroyable et comme d'habitude nous avions des restants. Pendant les journées, nous nous sommes réunis pour discuter, jouer à des jeux, résoudre des casse-têtes et nous nous sommes entraidés pour régler divers problèmes. En soirée, nous nous sommes assis autour d'un feu de camp en utilisant des palettes de bois que Ronald avait trouvées derrière Lowe's, Home Depot, Wal-Mart et autres. After coming back from our short trip to Los Angeles, we had the opportunity to relax with friends in the Yuma, AZ area.  We also attended a parade of lights, saw a live Nativity play, walked in the neighbourhood of decorated houses, took a ride in the back country and celebrated Christmas with friends. Christmas season in the Yuma area is very special to us. We found activities to brighten this time of year. With friends, we sat along the Main Street of Yuma to watch a parade of lights for over one hour.  Before the parade, we had a tasty lunch at the Lutes Casino Restaurant. We also attended an outdoor jazz concert of Christmas songs. Two of our favourite Christmas activities to do in the area is to attend the Jesus is Born live Nativity play at the Champion Church, with live animals and beautiful songs. The seating area is outdoor on bales of hay. It's magical. Our second activity is to walk into a gorgeous neighbourhood, where all the houses are lite and decorated. It makes the street glow. Ronald and Rejean B. went on back roads and found two old mines, The American Girl Mine and the Old Tumco mine, Gold Rock Ranch and also many, many boondocking areas. On another day, Ronald and Gerald D. went on a jeep ride in the nearby sand dunes and got stuck for a little while. The next week, Ronald went with Rejean P. in the same dunes and had the opportunity to drive the ATV and scared Rejean P. A few days later, Ronald and Gerald went to Glamis, CA where the dunes are much bigger and is known as the sand toy capital of the world. They saw very large expensive ATVs with 500-600 HP. On Christmas Day, we participated in organizing a potluck lunch with over 25 of our desert friends. Everybody brought their specialty dish. The food was amazing and as usual we had leftovers. During the day, we gathered together to chat, play games, work on puzzles, and helped each other fix a variety of things. At night, we sat around a camp fire using palettes for firewood that Ronald found behind Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart and others. All the photos from the trip are here.

Une visite à Los Angeles ~ A visit to Los Angeles

Nous avons laissé notre roulotte dans le BLM à Pilot Knob, près de Yuma AZ, avec nos amis Jules, Colette, Réjean et Jacqueline, pour passer quelques jours avec notre fils Eric et sa fiancée Chloé, à Los Angeles. En chemin, nous sommes passés par Palm Spring, où nous pouvions voir des milliers d’éoliennes de chaque côté de la route. C'était très impressionnant. Pendant notre séjour à Los Angeles, nous avons visité le célèbre Pink's Hot Dog, le Black Rabbit Rose Theatre, le boulevard Hollywood, le Magic Castle, le spectacle Don't Tell Comedy, Venice Beach et le studio CBS pour The Price is Right. Pink's Hot Dog est un petit restaurant de grande renommée de hot dogs qui est dans le secteur de Fairfax à Los Angeles. Les murs étaient couverts d’images d’acteurs célèbres qui s’étaient arrêtés ici pour manger. Vous pouvez manger un hot-dog avec n'importe quels garnitures et condiments que vous pouvez imaginer. Nous avons ensuite marché sur le boulevard Hollywood et assisté à un spectacle de magie au Black Rabbit Rose Theatre. Le lendemain, nous avons eu droit à une visite et à des spectacles de magie au Magic Castle à Hollywood. C'est un club privé dont Eric est un membre étudiant. Les spectacles étaient impressionnants avec des magiciens très très talentueux. Le bâtiment était majestueux et bien décoré. Après le souper, nous avons assisté à un spectacle de «Don't Tell Comedy» avec 8 humoristes qui nous ont fait rire toute la soirée. Nous avons passé un après-midi à marcher sur le grand quai, la plage et les rues voisines de Venice Beach. Nous avons également parcouru les canaux de Venice, où seuls les petits bateaux, les canoës et les pédalos sont autorisés. Toutes les arrière-cours des maisons face aux canaux étaient bien entretenues et décorées. Nous avons passé une longue et amusante journée aux studios de CBS pour l'enregistrement de "The Price is Right". Après avoir passé la sécurité, nous avons attendu longtemps avant d'être interrogés pour être dignes d'être sélectionnés comme candidats. Vous verrez le 5 février 2019, si nous avons été sélectionnés ou NON. Pendant que nous étions à LA, nous avons loué de petits scooters électriques. Ces scooters sont loués à la minute et vous permettent de circuler sur les pistes cyclables ou sur les rues. C'est un moyen abordable de voyager dans la ville au coût de 1 $ pour débuter, puis de 15 ¢ par minute. Dans les rues du quartier de Venice Beach, nous avons vu un certain nombre de VR garé dans les rues sans frais. Certains étaient en meilleure condition que d'autres. Sur le chemin du retour, nous avons emprunté la route 1, le long de la côte du Pacifique en passant par Long Beach, Seal Beach, Sunset Beach (où nous nous sommes arrêtés sur la plage pour le lunch), Huntington Beach, Newport Beach et Laguna Beach. Nous nous sommes également arrêtés pour prendre des photos en cours de route. Nous ne pouvions pas nous empêcher de nous arrêter à l'un de nos endroits préférés, La Jolla Cove. Ici, nous pouvions voir un grand nombre de phoques et d'otaries (lions, loups et ours de mer) se reposer sur la plage et sur les rochers. Certaines femelles nourrissaient ses petits. We left our trailer in the Pilot Knob BLM, near Yuma AZ, with our friends Jules, Colette, Réjean and Jacqueline, to spend a few days with our son Eric and his fiancé Chloé, in Los Angeles. On our way, we passed by Palm Spring, where we could see thousands of wind turbines on each side of the road. It was very impressive. While we were in Los Angeles, we got to visit the famous Pink's Hot Dog stand, the Black Rabbit Rose Theatre, Hollywood Boulevard, the Magic Castle, Don't Tell Comedy, Venice Beach and the CBS studio for the Price is Right. Pink's Hot Dog is an iconic hot dog stand that is a landmark restaurant in the Fairfax District in LA. The walls were covered with pictures of famous actors that had stopped here to eat. You can eat a hot dog with any topping that you can imagine. We then walked on Hollywood Blvd, and attended a magic show at the Black Rabbit Rose Theatre. The next day, we were treated to a visit and magic shows at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. This is a private club where Eric is a student member. The shows were up close magic with magicians that were very very good. The building was impressive and well decorated. After dinner, we attended the "Don't Tell Comedy" stand-up show with 8 comedians that made us laugh all night. We spent an afternoon, walking on the pier, the beach and the nearby streets of Venice Beach. We also walked the Venice canals, where only small boats, canoes and paddleboats are permitted. All the house's backyards facing the canals were well maintained and decorated. We had a fun and long day at the CBS Studios for the taping of "The Price is Right". After going through security, we waited in line a long time before being interviewed to be worthy to be selected as a contestant. You will see on February 5th 2019, if we were selected or NOT. While we were in LA, we rented small electric scooters. These scooters are rented by the minute, and allows you to travel on the bike paths or streets. It is an affordable way to travel in the city at a cost of $1 to start and then 15 ¢  per minute. On the streets of the Venice Beach neighbourhood, we saw a number of RV's that were parked on the streets at no cost. Some were in better shape than others. On our way back, we travelled on route 1 along the Pacific Coast passing by Long Beach, Seal Beach, Sunset Beach (we ate lunch on the beach), Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. We also stopped to take pictures along the way. We couldn't resist stopping at one of our favourite locations, La Jolla Cove. Here we could see a large number of seals and sea lions resting on the beach and the rocks. Some of the females were feeding their young. We had a lovely vacation. Nous sommes dans la région de Yuma, en Arizona, près de la frontière californienne depuis la semaine dernière. Nous sommes en train de faire du boondocking sur les terres de BLM. We have been in the area of Yuma, AZ, near the California border for the last week. We are boondocking on BLM land. We share this great area with friends we have met in previous years.  While we were here, we had the opportunity to see beautiful sunsets, and a number of large fields of vegetable crops and a field of cotton being picked up by a large combine. Notre 1ère semaine en Arizona - Our first week in Arizona

Après avoir quitté le Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino près d'El Paso, au Nouveau-Mexique, nous avons suivi la route 9 tout près de la frontière mexicaine. Nous nous sommes arrêtés pour manger dans une petite ville, Columbus, NM. Cette ville est proche de l’un des ports d’entrée au Mexique et à une ancienne station de train. Nous avons poursuivi notre chemin vers la très petite ville de Hachita, au Nouveau-Mexique, qui comprend 7 522 mines à proximité. Nous avons ensuite rejoint I-10 près de Lordsburg NM. Nous nous sommes arrêtés pour dormir au casino Del Sol à Tucson, en Arizona. Le lendemain, nous avons emprunté la route 86 pour Why AZ. Sur le chemin, nous avons vu un magnifique cimetière coloré et des forêts de saguaros. Cette route nous mène à travers la nation Tohono O'Odham, dans le désert de Sonora. Nous avons décidé de rester dans le camping Hickiwan Trails, dans la petite communauté appelée Why, AZ, à côté du Desert Diamond Casino. Nous sommes restés une semaine à 85 $, y compris les trois services. La ville tire son nom du fait que les deux routes principales, les routes 85 et 86, se croisaient à l'origine dans une intersection en Y. C’était la seule mine productive dans le district minier d’Ajo. Elle est située juste à l’extérieur de la ville, qui a été construite comme ville d’entreprise pour desservir la mine. La fosse, qui est presque circulaire, est approximativement un mile et demi de large, et une profondeur de 1100 pieds au centre. Elle a fermé en 1984-1985. Nous vous recommandons de ne parcourir que les 21 miles (32 km) en utilisant le guide, car la vue est assez similaire et vous aurez besoin d’un 4X4 ou d’un véhicule à grand dégagement pour la route de Puerto Blanco. De notre terrain de camping, nous avons pu voir des ânes et des coyotes et, la nuit, nous pouvions les entendre. Au cours de la journée, nous nous sommes promenés, avons discuté avec nos amis, joués à des jeux, fait des casse-têtes et passé des soirées cinéma en plein air. After leaving Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino near El Paso, New Mexico, we followed route 9 very close to the Mexican border. We stopped for lunch in a small town, Columbus, NM. This town is close to one of the ports of entry to Mexico, and is a former train station stop.  We continued our way to the very small town of Hachita New Mexico, which includes 7,522 nearby mines.  We then joined I-10 near Lordsburg NM. We stopped to sleep at the Del Sol Casino in Tucson, AZ. The next day, we travelled on route 86 to Why AZ. On the way, we saw a beautiful, colourful cemetery and forests of saguaros. This road takes us through the Tohono O'Odham nation, in the Sonoran Desert.  We decided to stay in the Hickiwan Trails RV Park, in the small community called Why, AZ, next to the Desert Diamond Casino.  We stayed for one week for $85, including all three services.  The town derives its name from the fact that the two major highways, State Routes 85 and 86, originally intersected in a Y-intersection. At the time of its naming, Arizona law required all city names to have at least three letters, so the town's founders named the town "Why" as opposed to simply calling it "Y." The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) later removed the old Y-intersection for traffic safety reasons and built the two highways in a conventional T-intersection south of the original intersection. The population in Why at the 2000 census was approximately 116. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names. During that week, we visited Ajo Mine Museum, the small town of Ajo AZ and the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The New Cornelia Copper mine opened in 1912. The New Cornelia mine is a currently inactive open-pit copper mine in Pima County, Arizona. It was the only productive mine in the Ajo mining district, and is located just outside the town of Ajo, which was built as a company town to serve the New Cornelia mines. The roughly circular pit is one and a half miles across at its widest point, and 1,100 feet deep at the centre. It closed in 1984-85. At its peak, mining operations in Ajo employed about 3000 people and produced 40,000 tons of copper annually.  It closed after a labour strike in 1983 and because of falling copper prices. One day, we went with our friends to visit the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument ($25). Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is a U.S. National Monument and UNESCO biosphere reserve located in extreme southern Arizona , which shares a border with the Mexican state of Sonora. The park is the only place in the United States where the organ pipe cactus grows wild. Along with organ pipe, many other types of cacti and other desert flora native to the Yuma Desert section of the Sonoran Desert region grow in the park. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is 517 square miles (1,338 square kilometres) in size. In 1976 the monument was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, and in 1977, 95% of Organ Pipe Cactus was declared a wilderness area. We did the two scenic drives of 21 miles and 41 miles. The shorter drive came with an Ajo Mountain Drive guide indicating 18 stops describing the surroundings, the cactus and plants. The Puerto Blanco drive brought us very very close to the Mexican border. The small fence was approximately 4 feet high, next to a Mexican highway. We recommend you do only the 21 mile drive using the guide because the view is quite similar and you will need a 4X4 or a high clearance vehicle. From our campground, we were able to see burrows and coyotes, and at night we could hear them. During the day, we went for walks, chatted with our friends, played games, did puzzles and had movie nights outdoor. C'est un départ ~ On our Way

La route de notre résidence près de Pembroke, en Ontario, jusqu’à Sarnia, en Ontario, était très accidentée et sinueuse. Nous avons passé la nuit dans le stationnement du Gateway Casinos Point Edward à Sarnia. Le lendemain, nous avons traversé à la frontière. Voici les questions qui nous ont été posées: Elle a demandé le total d'argent US et CAN que nous avions avec nous. D'où venons-nous? Qu'avons-nous comme nourriture, des fruits, des légumes et de la viande? (Nous lui avons dit que nous avions des condiments et de la nourriture en conserve.) Elle a dit que nous savions voyager. Où allons-nous tout l'hiver (elle voulait des détails)? Nous lui avons dit que nous allions nous promener en Arizona et en Californie et dans des parcs d'État au Texas, en Louisiane et en Floride. Elle a dit que c'était le meilleur voyage qu'elle ait entendu. Quand revenez-vous?  Qu'est-ce qu'on mange pour le lunch aujourd'hui? Elle a demandé si nous avions fait des sandwichs pour le lunch? Nous lui avons dit que nous nous arrêtions à Flint, MI, pour faire des épiceries et que nous allions manger là. Avons-nous des animaux domestiques? Non merci et elle a sourit. Elle a ensuite regardé sur le siège arrière de notre camion et elle nous a donné nos passeports et a dit de profiter de l'hiver. Pour notre première nuit aux États-Unis, nous avons séjourné à Lafayette, en Indiana, dans une propriété privée dont l'hôte est membre du site Web Boondockers Welcome, tout comme nous. Boondockers Welcome est un stationnement de nuit gratuit pour les VRs sur une propriété privée. Vous vous faites de nouveaux amis et vous dormez bien. Ce sont les résidents qui invitent les voyageurs à passer la nuit, à partager leurs histoires et à économiser leur argent pour la vraie aventure. https://www.boondockerswelcome.com/ Nous voulions visiter le musée et la bibliothèque du président Abraham Lincoln à Springfield, en Illinois, mais nous ne pouvions pas trouver de stationnement pour le camion et la roulotte. Nous avons donc continué notre voyage à St Louis, MO. Nous étions un peu en retard pour arriver à St Louis mais nous avons pu voir le Gateway Arch de St Louis depuis un magnifique parc de l'autre côté de la rivière. Ce parc est difficile d'accès et très difficile à sortir. Oh! mais quelle belle vue! Nous avons parcouru l’Arkansas et le Texas, dans les Panhandle Plains, sur les I-20 et I-30. Nous avons vu un certain nombre de champs de coton et un grand nombre de pompes à huile dans les champs. Nous avons également vu notre premier cactus cette année. En chemin, nous nous sommes arrêtés pour dormir dans une propriété de Boondockers Welcome; au Gateway Casino Point Edward à Sarnia; au Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino près d’El Paso (avec électricité et eau); au camping de Burns Park à North Little Rock; au  Lake Colorado City SP au Texas et dans quelques Walmarts. Notre dash cam a été capable de capturer quelques images et moments étranges. The road from our place near Pembroke, Ontario, to Sarnia Ontario was very hilly and curvy. We spent the night in the parking at the Gateway Casinos Point Edward in Sarnia.  The next day, we crossed at the Border. These are the Border crossing questions we were asked: She asked for the total US and Can money we had with us.  Where are we from?  Any food, fruits, veggies and meat? (We told her we had condiments and can food.) She said that we know how to travel. Where are you going all winter (she wanted detail)? We told her that we will be boondocking in Arizona and California and State Parks in Texas, Louisiana and Florida. She said that this was the best trip she had heard. When are you coming back? We said mid April. What are we having for lunch today? She asked if we had sandwiches made for lunch. We told her that we are stopping in Flint, MI, for groceries and we would get lunch there.  Any pets? No thanks you and she smiled. She then looked on the back seat of our truck and she gave us our passports and said to enjoy the winter. For our first night in the US, we stayed in Lafayette, Indiana on a private property that the host is a member of the Boondockers Welcome website just like us. Boondockers Welcome is a free Overnight RV Parking on Private Property. You make new friends and sleep soundly. It is locals that invite travellers to spend the night, share their stories, and save their money for the real adventure. https://www.boondockerswelcome.com/ We wanted to visit President Abraham Lincoln Museum and Library in Springfield, Illinois but we could not find parking for the truck and trailer. So we continued our trip to St Louis, MI. We were a bit late to get to St Louis but we were able to see the Gateway Arch in St Louis from a beautiful park across the river. This park is hard to get to and also very difficult to get out of. Oh what a view! We travelled through Arkansas and Texas, in the Panhandle Plains, on I-20 and I-30. We saw a number of cotton fields and a large number of oil pumps in the fields. We also saw our first cactus this year. On our way, we stopped to sleep at a Boondockers Welcome property; at the Gateway Casino Point Edward in Sarnia; at the Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino near El Paso (with electricity and water); in Burns Park campground in North Little Rock; in the Lake Colorado City SP in Texas and in a few Walmarts.
